Take two: Now with more puppy cuddling.
maddy
And then much later on, Lisa and Pauly came over for family night. I set up the timer on my camera and put it on top of the TV to take this FAMILY NIGHT PORTRAIT.
maddy
Later Sunday afternoon, Simone came over!
maddy
Aw.
maddy
Maddy likes to nap in sunbeams just like a cat.
maddy
Learning how to sit!
maddy
Learning her name.
maddy
It's cold and wintery out so I spent all of Friday night hanging out at home with the new pup. She's getting so much bigger!
maddy
It was just a bad dream, though.
maddy
We also noticed for the first time that sometimes when Maddy sleeps, her eyes roll back into her head.
maddy
She's like the most adorable zombie puppy ever. BRAINS!
maddy
Such winning hounds.
maddy
Speckly pals.
maddy
...and then they settled in together.
maddy
I love how Maddy looks like she's sitting in a little hand-seat. Hahaha.
maddy
Edie turned in circles padding the bed down...
maddy
Puppy kisses are the best.
maddy
I told Leigh that Edie and Maddy had become buds in her absence and put the dog-bed on the couch to demonstrate.
maddy
Leigh was out of traveling when we got Maddy and we'd been sending her puppy pics while she was on the road. When she got back in town three weeks later, she was excited to meet the little bean.
maddy
Oh, and Leigh just MIGHT'VE brought over all sorts of ridiculous outfits from when Edie was a puppy like this "fancy dress" that looks like a maid's uniform that poor Maddy was forced to run around in. Run away! Nooooo!
maddy
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL DAY?
maddy
Heartbreaker.
maddy
And some delicious teething toys.
maddy
On Saturday morning we went to the pet store and got Maddy her first dog bed.
maddy
Later on in the week, Gurj and Sarah came over and got to meet the little one. Paws on display, please.
maddy
Puppy bellies!
maddy
Later that evening, Ellen brought Piper over to meet Maddy.
maddy
On Sunday, Meredith snapped this pic of me taking Maddy out for a snow-free walk.
maddy
Tiny dog says goodbye!
maddy
Maddy likes to wedge her nose into cushion cracks.
maddy
Awwww, look at how Murdo's cradling her little puppy butt.
maddy
Blair and Maddy.
maddy
Adorable.
maddy
Maddy and Gretchen. This photo hurts my heart.
maddy
See how happy it makes her? Haha.
maddy
Kristen and Cat meeting Maddy.
maddy
Meredith LOVES Cranium. Mostly because she enjoys seeing her friends have to do stuff like...
maddy
It took her all of about 10 minutes to use her razor sharp puppy teeth (and tiny puppy raptor claws!) to create a puppy-sized hole in the gate's mesh that she could easily wriggle her way through! Most adorable jailbreak ever!
maddy
Our Stuytown apartment had so much open space that it was difficult to train Maddy to go to the bathroom on puppy pads. On Tuesday night, I ran out and bought one of those wooden gates so we could keep Maddy quarantined to the hallway while we were gone.
maddy
Aw, really?
maddy
She was so cold when we got her back inside that we had to wrap her up in a towel-nest.
maddy
The world's tiniest bean feel asleep with her little chinny-chin our our Meredith's lap like this.
maddy
Tiny dog in a pink shirt!
maddy
Taking the doogs out for their first walk together in the Stuytown courtyard.
maddy
Dog friends?
maddy
...and was surprised to find that Edie (who you can see has her dog-toenails painted!) considered my lap off-limits to Maddy. Haha. MY LAP!
maddy
Maddy was forced to slink away in what is probably the most adorable picture of dejection ever taken.
maddy
On Sunday afternoon, Scott brought Edie over to our apartment so she could meet Maddy. Maddy was as interested as she was concerned and kept getting chased in worried circles by Edie. Look at her eyes in this photo. Haha.
maddy
But a couple minutes later, they were both excited to learn that my lap has a two-wiener capacity.
maddy
She kept seeking refuge in my lap...
maddy
Pink pig puppy belly! Welcome to the family, Maddy! Happy February 2008!
maddy
Wrinkle-mouth and puppy paws!
maddy
I'll include a couple of close-ups for all you sleeping-puppy aficionados. Puppy wrinkle-mouth!
maddy
She is so tiny and so sleepy. This is one of the first times she managed to fall asleep not touching one of us. Haha.
maddy
Awwww.
maddy
She's pretty adorable.
maddy
On Saturday, Meredith parents came down to hang out with Maddy.
maddy
Welcome to the family, little one!
maddy
Her neck smells like soft puppy.
maddy
Meredith and our 10-week-old puppy who we named Maddy.
maddy
Trotting around doing some exploring. (Look how long her front leg looks! Ha!)
maddy
This is your new home! You live here now!
maddy
When we finally got her to hold still in the light, we realized that she had one brown eye and one blue eye (complete heterochromia).
maddy
Out of the cab and carrying her to our apartment.
maddy
See? It was so unbelievable. This photo looks totally staged with her little paw draped over my shoulder, but this was how she wanted to ride right from the get-go. It was about this time that we realized we'd gotten a weirdo.
maddy
As soon as we got her into the warmth of a cab, she stopped with all the strange mewling noises she was making and immediately settled down. We were trying to hold her on our laps, but she kept climbing up and wedging her self between our backs and the seat. It seemed like she really wanted to sit perched up on our shoulders.
maddy
She arrived wrapped in a blanket inside a tiny crate. We took her out and she was cold, shivering and making adorable "mewling" noises. We took her out of the crate and she was delighted to be with us immediately. We couldn't get over how cute she was.
maddy
Aw, seriously? I called Roxane (the breeder) that day and confirmed that we wanted her. (Here's a link to Roxane's Daschunds if anyone is interested! She's was great and we highly recommend her!)
maddy
As soon as I saw this photo, I was like "THAT'S OUR DOG." Meredith was excited and was like "YES!" (Later, Meredith told me that she didn't think the dog was all that cute but she trusted my judgement. Haha).
maddy
One morning in early February, I mentioned to Meredith that her birthday was coming up and asked her if there was anything in particular she wanted. She turned to me and said, "You know, I don't know how much longer I can go without owning a dog. Can we get a dog already?" We'd been talking about doing it for years and it finally seemed like the right time! After falling in love with Leigh's dog Edie, I told Meredith that I really wanted to get a dappled miniature daschund.

After looking around locally for a couple of weeks without any luck, I finally found a daschund breeder in Kentucky with a dame that birth to a litter of dappled pups! After corresponding with her for a couple days, she sent us photos on Valentine's Day. Aww.
