On Thursday morning, I spied this character on his way over to my apt. I like my neighborhood. Someone hung these up around the park to try to get people to pick up their dog poop. "Do the right thing" But then on the next block of my walk I encounter a community-made, 16' (?) sixteen-foot tall cardboard monster in the garden and she's redeemed. Signs up on the La Plaza fence saying farewell to the willow! I went across the street to collect some clippings of the willow tree. I was at work at Voray later this afternoon when I got a call from my parents interrupting a meeting. My dad had just found out the vertigo he'd been experiencing was caused by a cancerous tumor in his lung that had metastasized to 14 different tumors in his brain. (He would eventually succumb to this illness and passed away Sept 8, 2018, one-week shy of the 1 year anniversary of learning that he was ill) On Friday morning I awoke to the sound of the Parks department cutting down my favorite Willow tree in La Plaza Cultural. The tree's roots had been damaged by salt water when the neighborhood flooded during hurricane Sandy and they were worried about it eventually falling over and hurting someone. While out walking Maddy... ...I noticed someone had put up a passive aggressive generation burn note on the La Plaza community bulletin board. Spicy! Love living in NYC and randomly lucking my way into seeing things I wasn't planning on. On Sunday I was walking through the park and arrived just in time ... ...to catch the beginning of Much Ado About Nothing. Gorgeous, huge, "luna white" hibiscus flowers were in bloom ...exploring La Plaza with Maddy. Thursday afternoon... Two months later after I last spotted it out for the trash at the end of April , the cursed clown art wood carving made a haunting reappearance in La Plaza. Please someone burn this already! We explored the new plants on our walk. There is also a few new beds of medicinal plants for everyone to use. The are always building cool weird things in La Plaza. Sad sign posted in La Plaza about Hyacinth, one of the chickens, being killed! Spent some quality turtle time in La Plaza with my favorite sunbather. ...nice to see the beginning of spring! Went to La Plaza on Sunday with Maddy... Walked Maddy in La Plaza and was happy to see the turtles were back in the pond! ...and chicken chasing with Maddy. Morning La Plaza sunshine... Monday afternoon in La Plaza. On Monday I had lunch in La Plaza... Spent my evening hanging in La Plaza I love having my party in this garden. Such a great space to have in the neighborhood! Friday I went over to La Plaza and noticed that the peaches were in! Love me some local Manhattan peaches! Such weird mirror symmetry in this plant! Watching bees on Wednesday. Feed me! Tuesday morning garden exploring with my neighbor Zayla (that I met out earlier in the week). Spotted this handsome turtle sunning in La Plaza on Sunday. Took Maddy for a long Saturday walk... ...admired the bees on the bright pink flowers! Thursday afternoon walk through La Plaza which is looking more-jungley by the day! Summer in NYC is my fave. Stopped by La Plaza that evening and watched an art show that was going on. Woke up early on Wednesday to perfect weather and walked over to... Sat in La Plaza and listened to the bees buzz around. Happy May 2016, everybody! Yes! Maddy was very interested and gentle! They had some cute interspecies nose bumping before moving on our way! If you stoop down next to the pond and move slowly, the curious painted box turtles will come up to say hello! Looked out the window to find the paper mache dragon I'd seen my neighbors making in the garden a few days earlier! Looked really great after being painted! Rolando also had some paper mache magic tree that was decorated with his famous soda cans he turns into metal flowers! In the evening I went for a walk with Maddy and hung out with my neighbors in the garden. He is getting so good! Rolando and some other artists were making a giant paper-mache dragon for an upcoming street parade! ...and then they let him get on with his garden exploring. I got to feed him some greens... ALSO, this woman and her son were there with their pet tortoise! Like all the 90 degree angles in these guys. Spent some time hanging with the turtles in the park. Chickens were hanging out in the trees next to the sidewalk on my walk home. We caught up on neighborhood news. Good yarn-mural on the park fence! They built a lovely new trellis and benches in the community garden. We visited our favorite chickens that like to hang out in a pot! Blossoms on the trees! I love the spring. New London Keyes yarn artwork on the La Plaza fence! Took Maddy for a walk and and she gave the chickens one last heckling for the year. Gael Garcia Bernal in front of the La Plaza gates. Spent the afternoon in my fave garden. Roses & Beetles Headed out into the world. Digging the newly-painted purple footprints. ...and someone dunked their feet in purple paint and made footsteps that go between the two community gardens. (Adam Purple pretty much single-handedly created every garden in the Lower East Side by riding his bike up to the central park horse stables, collecting manure, and carting it back downtown to mix into the soil around all the empty lots where they'd torn buildings down. Over the years and through thousands of trips with manure, he turned all the empty lots into fertile topsoil where plants could grow! They had out purple juice... I could watch giant bees collect pollen all day Thumb for scale. Watched the flowers in the garden on the way home. On the walk home I passed the La Plaza bulletin board and learned that Adam Purple had died. Really nice that our community does this Love the pink and light green New pond expansion in La Plaza looking really nice. Spotted the chickens taking a dirt bath.
