Making things even better (worse?), at the time, Grant was doing all kinds of body building because he was writing for Muscle and Fitness magazine. So he looked like if Miyam Bialik was a member of the Ukranian Women's Weightlifting Team.
Hey, it's Gizmo! This is totally one of those costumes where you buy the pattern and the fabric and your mom would sew it for you. When I was seven years old my mom hooked me up with an "ET the Extraterrestrial" jammie that turned out looking a lot like this one. (She even put a little pen light in the finger so I could make that shit light up. I love you mom!)
Go banana! Go banana! So in the midst of all this craziness, I told my brother that I kept seeing some kind of weird movement coming from this rounded, second-story room that was overlooking the street. He was like "No way, stop bullshitting. You're just trying to freak me out." So I was like, "Watch this, I bet I can get a picture of whatever it is." So I took the picture and sure enough...
In the middle of the mayhem, this group of 8 or 9 kids, all in matching orange and black "80s outfits," run into the middle of the dance area, throw down this piece of cardboard and take turns pretending to breakdance. It was some of the funniest shit I've ever seen.
With our costumes all finished, we walked out of my apartment door and were immediately met by this insane crowd of people. My apartment was on Market and 15th like two blocks from the heart of the Castro. Which means that Halloween in my neighborhood looks alot like...
On the way back towards my place I made them stop and get some slices, hoping it'd help soak up some of the alcohol (and anti-freeze) that was in their systems.
Sid and my brother, crunked out of their tiny minds, kifed a giant, two-litre bottle of Malibu (fucking Malibu!) from the house and sat on the ground passing it back and forth taking swings and cackling. See what happens when you get the Night Train in your blood?
We left the party and by the time we got back out on the street both my brother and Sid had finished their bottles of Night Train. (The next day while we were looking at all these photos my brother got to this one and said "Yep, finishing that bottle of Night Train and posing for this photo is pretty much the last thing I remember." Hahaha. At the next party we met...
On the way over, we stopped in a liquor store where my brother and Sid, despite my repeated warnings, decided to try Night Train Express (the very finest of fortified bum wines) for the very first time. I was like "Yo, Guns N' Roses even wrote a song about how that shit's even too hardcore for them...do you know how hardcore that is?" At first they laughed at me, but then they started to understand that I wasn't joking around when the toothless 60-year old man at the register who had tattoos on his face looked at them increduously and said "Night Train? Are you sure you want to do that, guys? Wow." For a minute I thought they were going to back out - I mean shrugging off Axl Rose's warning is one thing, but to ignore the tattooed-face check-out guy? That's crazy. But in the end, they put their money on the counter. The checkout guy just kept shaking his head as he bagged them up and as we left the he called out "Good luck!" Hahaha.
Here's Sid and I with our smoking coconut-bikini tops. After we got our outfits on, we realized that in San Francisco dressing up as a hulagirl isn't just for Halloween and worried that some people might not ever realize that we'd even dressed up.
The only thing that the Halloween Store had left in triplicate were these stoopids hats and grass skirts. Check out my brother's facial response to me saying "Well, I guess that settles it. Looks like we're going to be Hawaiian Hula girls!" Hahaha.
...Halloween costume shopping! The best way to select a costume is wait until like 45 minutes before the Halloween parties all start and then go to the Halloween store...you go through the ravaged shelves and try to put a costume together with what little supplies they have left. (This is the genius method that led to such classic past-Halloween outfits like Magnum P.I. and Sort-of one of The Misfits!). Since my brother, Sid and myself were all going to be going out together, we agreed to try to find costumes that matched.
After some time on the dancefloor (where I repeated demonstrated my hungry boobie-zombie act on girls I didn't know) we bid farewell to Superbulge *shudder* and called it a night.
Grant was all excited because he thought this woman was dressed up as something for Halloween but then a few days later he saw the picture and realized that she was just dressed up as herself.
And hey, I bet you'd completely forgotten that this was Halloween night. We'd almost forgotten too - or at least until Charlene and Dave found these creepy masks that the put on. (This was our first Halloween in two years that we didn't get to attend Viola's "My Friends are All Out of Your League" Supermodel Party. See: Halloween 2001 and Halloween 2002.)
Sarah making friends with the scary-ass costume guy that stands outside of Ricky's Halloween shop on Broadway for most of the month of October. If you come to NYC during then, watch out for this guy. He stands really still against the storefront pretending he's a statue and then when someone walks a little too close he'll jump out in front of them, or just reach out and touch their face, or my personal favorite, just as someone passes him, he'll start walking behind them really close...people will get like ten feet, sense someone is following them and when they turn around, they're like "AHHHHHHH!" Anyway, Sarah and I stood around for like ten minutes cracking up watching people freak the fuck out.
After laughing like two crazed loons at the mop photos, Doug decided it would be funny to capture an action shot of him breaking something...here's him mid-throw with a CPU monitor we found on the street.
My camera captures photos in a pretty high resolution...but when I shrink down the photos for this site, a lot of the detail ends up getting lost. So here, for your amusement, is a collage of some of the better faces Doug made that I managed to catch in film during the mop fiasco.
Doug and I pounded our Big Buds and made a quick run to the store to pick up some more beeyahs. When we returned we started looking for Josh to give him his beer and we found that he had....
Okay, so check this out: We're back in Manhattan and we're walking down Houston towards my place and this woman is talking on her cellphone and walking towards us. She gets like 8 feet from us and we both suddenly hear this huge fart and as she passes us she says to her friend on the phone "Oh shit, I think these white boys just heard me fart!" and starts laughing. So we chased her down the street and asked her if she'd pose for a pic! In this pic, Doug and I are yelling "Ohhhhhh!" while she's telling her friend on the phone "Oh shit! Oh shit! The white boys that heard me farting is taking my picture and shit! They're taking my picture!" Soooo funny.
A block past the farting woman, Doug finds a mop on the street and decides that he going to use it, as he said, for some "Good ol' fashioned mop-pole-vaulting." Here is off the stairs....
This is probably the funniest pic of the night (or at least 2nd runner up behind Josh Teixeira passed out standing up against a wall...hehe). Bonus points for Doug's face in the background.
After standing around blatantly leering, open-mouthed at Viola's ridiculous friends for an hour or so (I mean look at her ass, Jesus!), we decided that it was time to head out to Brooklyn to our friend Jordan's Halloween party (aka - going back to the minor league).
Here are the two "Ever" girls: The "Hottest Girl EVER" poses with "The Drunkest Girl EVER." (and yo, check it, there's that Smirnoff Ice shit again...you thought i was just playing?).
I also randomly ran into Rob Berliner (Not only does he live in Philly, we went to high school together...which makes it a Double Random Whammy! Woooo!).
Right when we got to Jordan's party we ran into Josh Teixeira who continued his "80's Movie Costume Theme" by dressing up as Gilbert from "Revenge of the Nerds."
Doug had just cut off all of his hair so he had to pencil in his "devil-lock" hair with make-up. HAHAHAHA! We hopped into a cab and headed uptown to go to Dave and Viola's party (which you may remember from last year.
Doug couldn't manage to salvage enough trash to make a good William Wallace costume (he needed a shield and a sword), so I talked him into dressing up as a Misfit with me. Doug got to be Doyle...
With the exception of Viola, whose name and likeness I won't likely ever forget, I couldn't tell you the rest of these people's names if my life depended on it.
Grant, Frank and Nina. Frank took one of those "fake butt" things, cut out eye holes, glued wig-hair all over it, attached a strap-on dildo, and transformed his entire head into a giant cockn'balls. I'm not really sure what the Star Trek shirt had to do with anything...
Magnum Motherfucking P.I.! (P.I. = Pimped Investigator, bee-eye-atch!) This shot was taken at my place right before we left for the party. I chose to pose in front of the Hawaiian mural that covers that back wall of our Tikki Living Room.
Nina, Grant and Viola. Grant's horns came off because he was so fervently making out with Nina...see how she's missing make up and he's got white shit all over his face? Where's her hand anyway? Jesus!
Vin was going to wear a suit and tie with horns and tell everyone he was a "Handsome Devil" which we thought would be pretty smooth. But in typical Vin fashion, he decided last minute to instead dress up as "A Chef." (Huh?) We told him that "A Chef" wasn't a very good costume. So here he decided he was going to go as "The Angry Chef." (Now that's more like it!)
When he got to the party, most people there gave him weird looks as if they were wondering who the guy was who got off of work from the restaurant and came right to the party without putting on a costume. Needless to say, Vin didn't stay at the party very long.
Grant, dressed up as Pan (the horny god of Baccanalia, appropriately enough) and Nina dressed up as a wood-nymph (they were supposed to be from a Midnight Summer's Dream).
Me with Viola as a Fembot. (Sweet Jesus.) You know, I would normally think that any girl who dressed up in an Austin Powers-related costume in the year 2001 was corny. But for some reason, I thought Viola pulled it off.
Growing despondent after almost 2 hours in the costume store, Josh finally gave up on coming up with a really creative inexpensive costume and instead opted to drop some serious pocket lettuce on the Official Star Wars™ Princess Leia costume. Here we see him striking a "frightened Leia" pose in my apt's front room. (and yes, that is a giant metal slide in the background. Don't ask.)
You are indeed, her bitch. From how tough Laurie looks in this photo you'd never guess that a mere two hours later she was throwing up in the bushes outside of the party we went to. She didn't only ruin her own night, she ruined Vin's as well by thwarting his plans to make out with her.
