the october roundup
october 2004
Hey, hey! So we're on to my second month living out in San Francisco. Most of my month was spent working or entertaining people from out of town. Leigh, Emily and my little brother all took separate trips out to visit in October (and those visits all get their own entry!). Plus, I spent three days visiting NYC...but here are all the other random pics from the month that don't merit their own entry.
Saturday, October 2nd
So after my first month in town (that was mostly spent apartment hunting and then going to bed early because I couldn't find anyone fun to hang out with at night) I finally met my savior: Ladies and Gentleman, Mr. Mike Fucking Doyle. Mike saw on my site that I was moving out to SF and on the first Saturday in October sent me an email tipping me off to a backyard party that was going on later in the evening. I wrote him back and was like "Thanks for the invite, but would you mind meeting up with me and we can go together? I don't know anyone in town and I don't want to be that guy that's standing around at a small party where everyone knows each other and everyone's wondering what he's doing there." Mike agreed and I went over to a bar called Casanova where he was DJing to meet up.
We hit it off immediately and headed over to the party.
After the party, Mike had to go back to Casanova and DJ so I ended up teaming up with Mike's best friend Michael. Michael and I ended up going to some other bar in the neighborhood so that he could...

...get his mack on with the super-cute girl on the left. He was chatting up a storm and things were going pretty smoothly until around 1am when he opened his backpack and handed me a beer that we'd bought for the party and had been carrying with us. He'd barely gotten off a sip when from out of nowhere one of the giant goony bouncers came up from behind, grabbed him by the neck and was like "HEY! WE DON'T SELL THAT BRAND OF BEER IN HERE....DICKHEAD!" Michael apologized and offered to throw it out, but the bouncer (still holding him by the neck) insisted he leave. Hard to get in a smooth goodbye to the ladies when you're getting tossed out by your neck (literally) by a monster.
So we went back to the Casanova to meet up with Mike and his friends Zach and Nathaniel (who are in a band called The Blood Arm and were up visiting from LA).
Hahahah.
After Mike was finished up at Casanova (PS - Mike, I have no recollection of where that box of Rice-a-Roni came from. Do you remember?), we piled into Michael's car and headed to a secret destination known only as "The Slides."
So after driving up a bunch of crazy hills, we finally got to this weird neighborhood that had a park in the middle of it with these two concrete slides built into the hill.

You climbed to the top of a hill, grabbed one of the flattened cardboard boxes that was stacked nearby and then you...
....SLIDE! These pics don't do it any justice by these things are fast as fuck.
Mike D. actin' the foo' on the way down.
After we all had slid, oh, about thirty times each, Mike D. wanted to see if he had the camera skills to capture me doing a Grant Stoddard-inspired David Lee Roth kick. First attempt, way early...plus he's got a finger covering 1/3 of the lens.
But on the 2nd attempt, JACKPOT! (And this time with only a 1:10 finger to lens coverage ratio.
Monday, October 4th
On Monday evening I got a call from a guy in SF named Algy (not pictured here). Algy is really good friends with my buddy Tom Donohue in NYC and Tom set us up on a man date!) inviting me out to see a band called Tarantula. Anyway, when I got to the venue, I ran into Nina's friend Jason who I knew from NYC until he disappeared into thin air. Turns out he moved to SF. You may remember Jason as the "Questionable Gay-Porno Jason" Tara and I discovered...(WARNING: EXPLICIT MAN-PORN COMING UP)
...in a porno mag we found at a coffee shop in Houston when I was visiting her after SXSW in 2004. (Here's a quick flashback for y'all).

Here's the side-by-side version. I think the jury's still out on this one, right? (And I mean, we now know that he moved to San Francisco. Hmmmm).
Anyway, Tarantula rocked my world like no other live band I'd seen in years. If you ever here that they're playing in your area, make sure you check them out. You won't be disappointed.

Thursday, October 7th
Before being hired by AdBrite, I'd been using their service to sell advertising on this site - on Thursday morning, I received my very first paycheck for all the ads that had been bought! Wooooo!
Then later that night I hopped into my car and headed into Chinatown to celebrate...

...Mike Doyle's birthday! Woooooo!
After a few drinks, we went around the corner to score some late night eats at this place called Sam Wo which is apparently famous for a waiter that worked there for like 30 years named Edsel Ford Wong who was rude to all the customers. I just Googled him and found out that he was famous for saying things like "You want tea? Get it yourself!" Ooooooh! Caustic! After getting my lo mein on, it was time for....
...CHINATOWN BIRTHDAY KARAOKE! Woooo! Now we're talking! We headed over to some little narrow dive right down the street and...
...the karaoke jams were kicked. Michael and NJ (it's her name, not the state).
This guy is Mike D's friend Ethan. He's fucking awesome. (He reminded me a lot of my good friend David - except he looks even more like Jeff Bridges - so I instantly liked him).
Birthday boy duet.
Wednesday, October 20th
At the office on Wednesday we welcomed Yelena, our very first programming hire (flanked by Gidon and Philip).

Then later that night I met up with Mike and Michael and we went out drinking at some bar right down the street from my apartment that actually had...
people out dancing on a Wednesday night! Woooo!
I even saw my first "Hot Sanfranciscan!" Hello there, cutie with a little sleeveless striped sweater on.
It started to feel like old times in NYC (or at least until it was 1:15am and we had to leave because THE BAR WAS CLOSING! And then, insult to injury, I had to walk home because PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION HAD ALSO CLOSED! Whaaaaaaaat?)
Tuesday, October 26th
Next Tuesday I met up with Mike, NJ and Jamie and then we went over to a bar called Amber (I think?) to meet up with...
...my roomie Kareen and her...
...crazy hot, crazy tall friend Amber that was in town visiting from Vegas. Check out Amber dwarfing Michael.
After we closed out the bar (at um, 1:30) we all headed back to our apartment for some beers.
And dip! It's just not a party without dip! Here's yet ANOTHER girl named Amber that was visiting!
This is Kareen's SGBFF (super-gay best friend forever) whose name I've totally since forgotten. In addition to making more gay innuendos in a night than are in an entire season of Will and Grace, he's also a fan of chest-nuzzlin' and titty biting. Here he is giving Amber a little titty-nuzzle (note that he doesn't even have to bend down to do so!)...
...and here he is nipping at my nipples.
Oh, and Michael got drunk and started carrying around Chandler the Dog like he was a bag o' grain. Hahah.
Thursday, October 28th
At the office on Thursday the printer we were working with showed us a mock-up of the big company logo banner we'd hired them to create and on the mock-up was a test print out they'd done for another customer. We liked him so much we told them not to cut it and hung it up on our office wall.
You love the new AdBrite mascot!
Friday, October 29th
Friday was Philips birthday! Here's me sneaking up on him with a lit cake while he was on the phone with a client.
Happy Birthday, Philip!
