So check it out: Hope Stevenson, this girl I went to
high school with (who was two grades older and was one of the
dreamy older girls that
we all had crushes on...awwwww) somehow came across my website and
emailed me. Turns out she's dating PJ, another guy we went to
high school
with
- and invited me and Amy Albano (who ALSO went to Roxbury High School)
to go out to Brooklyn and see PJ's
new band play.
Amy and I met up in Manhattan and took the NR out to Park Slope. Turns
out that Southpaw, the venue PJ's gig was at, was right around the
corner from the apartment Amy and I were roomies at when I first moved
to NYC in January of 2000. Here's us posing with the freaky Zulu Lady
statue right outside of our former subway stop.
As soon as we walked in the door we spotted Hope. Despite the fact
that I hadn't seen her since '93 (what's up, ten years?!?) she looked
almost exactly the same (minus the totally hot B.U.M. Equipment stirrup
pants
and Candies™ she used to wear. (Aw yeah, Jersey lemme hear ya!).

Amy, PJ (who I think goes by "Peter" now, so that's what I'll call
him moving forward), Peter's bandmate (Matt, I think?) and Hope.
After catching up inside for a bit, we headed out to see Peter's band's
tour bus...
...a short bus (or to those of us who grew up in less-than-PC Jersey,
a "tart cart").0
Back in high school, Peter played guitar in a band with Scott
Jentzen called Symaryan. Peter asked about Scott and they
hadn't talked in a few years so we called him (and woke his married
ass up). Incidentally, I just Googled the name "Symaryan" hoping that
I could find some obscure mention of them from way back in the day
(we're talking like '91-'92 here) and all that came back was a transcript
of some text-based Dungeons and Dragons game (M.U.D.) where somebody's
magic warrior elf-sprite is name "Symaryan." Too bad you
think I'm kidding.
Peter and the band were kind enough to give Amy and I a ride back to
Manhattan on their way to NJ.
Amy and I made an immediate beeline for the backseat...because, you
know, that's where are the cool kids sit.
After parting ways with the lovely Hope and company *sigh*, Amy and
I popped into Bleecker bar to say hi to her friend that was bartending.
There was some big "work party" thing going on and we busied ourselves
trying to guess what they all did for a living.
Junior Mortgage Brokers. Definitely Junior Mortgage Brokers. The Teva's
gave him away in a heartbeat.
After that, Amy headed home and I went over to Piano's to sing a quick
diddy at Sid and Buddy's Karaoke. Here's Stephanie and Buddy tearing
it up.
