the october roundup

october 2003

You'll notice that the month of October was pretty quiet. Grant had left for LA and Tara had moved back to Texas. I spent most of the month staying home and trying to save some money for the upcoming European Super Vacation that we were leaving for on the 21st. So here's a smattering of pics from when I actually left my house in October. Enjoy!

Saturday, October 4th

Saturday night Vin and I were walking around the Lower East Side so we stopped by DJ Lauren Flax's birthday party...

...where she showed off the "FLAX" panties she'd gotten as a gift earlier on in the day.

Sunday, October 5th

On Sunday, surprise guest visitor Kate Hill was in town from LA. She, Emily and I walked over to the Magnolia Bakery in the West Village for a few of their infamous cupcakes.

Oh, so this is what it tastes like when you use an entire stick of butter per cupcake.

You think you know Crazy? You wouldn't know Crazy if Charles Manson was eating Fruit Loops on your front porch.

Monday, October 6th

Fuck, I wish this picture had come out better. It's me with Howard, the guy that owns Nolita Tavern, and he's throwing down a "bling-bling" coldlamp for the cam. (He's holding up his huge diamond pennant with a fistfulla hundreds).

Uh-oh! Karaoke!

Sarah downstairs at only her 2nd time singing karaoke!

Wednesday, October 8th

On Wednesday, Sarah took me to some party CosmoGirl Magazine was throwing for Michelle Branch. After fighting our way through the throng surrounding the fancy top-shelf open bar, we did the only sensible thing: doubled up.

But with the size of the scotch the lead-handed bartendress poured me, it was more like quadrupling up. Jesus.

Jonathan Hurwitz and Marti (who are getting married soon, awwwwww).

Me and Sarah (who would be getting married soon if I was just a little more Jewish).

Ba-ba-buttcrack!

You know a party's had a great open bar when people are accidentally doing that one-eye wink. Yeah, open bar! Yeah!

Thursday, October 9th

Early on Thursday evening, my friend Bev Chase decided that she had too many errands to run before leaving town early the next morning on a trip and had to give up her Radiohead ticket. Being the amazing friend she is, she suggested to Emily that I take her ticket. So I get a call from Emily out of the blue and she's like "What are you doing tonight?" Me: "Nothing. I'm tired. I'm staying in." Emily: "No, you're not! You're actually going to go see Radiohead with me at Madison Square Garden." (I'll omit the part where I jumped around and started screaming like Grant at a Backstreet Boys concert...but suffice it to say, I was excited).

So Emily and I headed uptown to Bev's apartment to pick up her ticket and then we ate delicious Quizno's subs. (mmmm). Right before hopping a cab to MSG, Emily and I spotted this bitching-ass, chopped, custom mini-van. Check that shit out, yo. If the A-Team had been dwarves, this would've been their vehicle of chizzoice.

02.04.04 - Addendum:
So tonight I got the bestest email ever. It said:
"I live in the same apartment building with the owner of that black van. The owner of this van looks like eerily like Fabio: long blond hair, constant tan and constantly wears the long beach tank top. His two tiny "hot dog" dogs, that he walks with everywhere, constant yelping wake the apartment. Anyway, FYI."

That's so great. I was totally hoping it was owned by a family of dwarves, but picturing the tan guy driving it with his long blond hair blowing out the driver-side window and his two weiner dogs hanging out the passenger side, that's almost as good.

The concert was fucking amazing - I'd never seen Radiohead live and they blew my tiny little mind. Thanks again Bev & Emily! I love yous guys!

Friday, October 10th

On Friday, I got another surprise call out of the blue: Kara Saks (who you may remember recently got married), was in New York City! She'd come down from Canada to take an weekend class in Princeton and wanted to see if I was around to get dinner in the West Village. So I left work a little early and met up with her and her brother Billy for some tasty Italian food.

Friday night I met up with Jamie Kirkpatrick, Colin and Colin's rand new lady Heather.

On the way home, I was happy to see that my local McDonald's has re-instituted it's "Free Nap With Every Value Meal" policy. I know how it is lady, the McChicken makes me sleepy too!

Saturday, October 11th

For whatever reason, I only took one photo all day on Saturday; of Fatty and I going sunglasses shopping after our brunch. Dig my new look?

Sunday, October 12th

Sunday morning I met up with Sarah and Emily to get some BREFFIS at Clinton Street Bakery.

Even though we were seated together, they did their best job pretending that they didn't know me...

...while I took them through my repertoire of "Faces Nobody Likes You To Make in Public."

Sarah to Emily: "Has he stopped doing it yet?"

"No."

I'm so down with O.P.P. (Other Peoples' Pets). If you're out walking your dog and I see you - chances are, you're getting stopped and like it or not, I'm going to spend some time loving your pooch. Here's a picture of me with what had to be the raddest, happiest, silkiest pit bull puppy I've ever had the privilege of accosting on the street.

Sarah making friends with the scary-ass costume guy that stands outside of Ricky's Halloween shop on Broadway for most of the month of October. If you come to NYC during then, watch out for this guy. He stands really still against the storefront pretending he's a statue and then when someone walks a little too close he'll jump out in front of them, or just reach out and touch their face, or my personal favorite, just as someone passes him, he'll start walking behind them really close...people will get like ten feet, sense someone is following them and when they turn around, they're like "AHHHHHHH!" Anyway, Sarah and I stood around for like ten minutes cracking up watching people freak the fuck out.

Then we went to Washington Sqaure Park and managed to catch these two rad shots of the finale of Tic N' Tac's show. (Tic N' Tac are twins from Harlem that front a breakdancing troupe that performs regularly in the park most of the year. If you're ever in New York, you should try to catch them in the park because they're even better than the scary Halloween guy.)

Check him out, mid running-flip over six people. Insanity.

Sunday night I went to Sid n' Buddy karaoke at Piano's. Here's Candy and Sarah.

Here's Buddy playing a guitar solo on some girl's leg. Hahahaha.

Candy's so good at Karaoke that everytime she sings I get all excited and when I get excited I just start snapping tons of pictures. So I have all these pictures of Candy looking like this, just all relaxed and singing. Yeah.

I love stupid photo projects. This one's called "Smoosh Your Face."

Dave and Sarah (Here's where you play the mp3 of SaltNPepa's "Push It.")

Candy. Holy fucking shit. ("Ahhh. Ssssss. Smoosh it!")

Me. ("Smoosh it good!")

Dan. ("Ahhhhhh! Ssssss! Smoosh it!")

Matt and Sarah. ("Sma-sma-sma-Smoosh it real good!") Woooo.

Thursday, October 16th

On Thursday, my co-worker Bernie and I headed down to Atlanta on business to meet with folks from the Atlanta Journal Constitution, a client of ours.

When we got out of meeting we had some time to kill before we had to head back to the airport and I remember that my good friend (and former ModemMedia co-worker) John McHale lives in Atlanta. I called him and found out that he his work was just a few blocks away from where we were calling from. He hopped in his car and five short minutes later, Johnny was on the spot.

Bernie and I had already eaten lunch two hours previously, but John said that since we were in Atlanta, we had to go eat BBQ. He took us to a place called "Daddy D'z BBQ Joynt." "But John," we protested, "we're not hungry!" "Don't worry," he winked, "you'll have room for this."

Awwww, yeah. What's up, pulled pork with beans, rice and cornbread - how are you doing on this fine day?

I'd barely gotten my cornbread down and John had already finished.

Friday, October 17th

On the Friday before leaving for vacation, I headed out to NJ to hang out with the Fam. Right when I got into town, I stopped to visit my friend Scott (this is around 10pm), but becasuse he has to young kids and gets up for work super early, he pretty much fell dead asleep like 10 minutes after I got there.
