september roundup:
part II

septermber, 2003

Here's the rest of the pictures from the September Roundup (or click here to go to Part One)

Tuesday, September 16th

Nerve hosted the NYC premiere for "My Life Without Me." Afterwards, we all went to Piano's for a little afterparty. Here's me with Sarah Polley.

Zara and Rockabilly Tara.

Alison and Brandon.

Me and winky Zara.

Zara and winky Matty. (What's with all the winking that's going on?)

Yaaaaaaaaaaaay, movies!

Afterwards, we went up to Plaid for some other movie afterparty and we ran into Wendy and Mike Tully!

Wednesday, September 17th

For lunch on Wednesday, Grant and I decided to explore some of the finer cuisine of the "Feast of San Genaro" street festival. It's the largest, and longest running (the first one was in 1926) annual celebration in NYC. It takes up all of Mulberry street for like, 10 blocks.

We ended up deciding on garlic bread cheesesteaks. For desert we got a funnel cake and a bag of deep friend Oreos. Holy shit.

Later that night while walking around the East Village, we ran into "Pastel Man." I tried to get Grant to pretend he was doing something picture-worthy so that I could get a few sneaky pictures of his amazing outfit, but Grant started totally cracking up and Pastel Man caught on to what we were doing. I only managed to get this pic before he managed to get away. See you next Easter!

After that, Grant went home and Tara and I went to the Hole to people watch.

The only noteworthy thing we saw inside there was this dude who was wearing jeans with zipper pockets.

Oh, and I also managed to get yet another pic of Tara on the can. By the way, check out those smoking leopard-print panties she's got on. Wine coolers? Leopard panties? What's going on with her lately?).

Friday, September 19th

Friday night Kate Hill was in town from LA and Laurie Choi was in town from DC. A whole buncha us met up at Drinkland to catch up. L to R: Emily, Laurie and Jen (The Sisters Choi), and Kate.

This pic is awesome. I was trying to take a picture of the neato paintjob in the backroom and this kid (that none of us knew) that was sitting back there saw me about to take a picture and got all hunched over and made his best "suburban gangsta" face. Sweet.

Back out on the dancefloor I found none other than Josh Barah, a college friend and former Crackhouse resident, cutting rug with the ladies.

Afterwards, I left to meet up with Tara & Co at the Hole. Tara (in knee socks - hoooo-ah!) and Nazita.

Me and Irene.

Saturday, September 20th

Fuck, dude. What the hell happened to Maiden, huh? "Dance of Death?" No self-repecting 15 year old would ever put this poster up in his room.

Monday, September 22nd

Hey look! NEW SHOES! Some of you are probably all like, "Yeah, so what?" But those of you that know me know that I've been wearing the same ratty-ass pair of of Rod Lavers that I bought near the end of my senior year in high school (in, um, 1994). Nine years later, the finally crapped out when the sole of the right shoe pretty much fell off. So what did I get? That's right, the same exact pair of sneakers.

Monday night karaoke was extra-special because there were all these Mafiosa guys there that wandered in after eating at Lombardi's nextdoor. They all sang Frank Sinatra songs.

No, no! You can't hurry love. No! You'll just have to wait. Seriously.

Then Grant and Buddy teamed up for one of the most explosive performances of Van Halen's "Panama" I've ever seen. Between the two of them, they managed to pull about half of and six "Faces of Rock." Here's Grant pulling the "Oh My God!"

Here's Buddy pulling the infamous "Lick the Air!"

Hahahaha. And here's Buddy caught in the middle of pulling my favorite "Face of Rock," the "Can You Belive How Fast I'm Playing This Guitar?"

Wednesday, September 24th

On Wednesday, Grant and I got to the office only to find samples of some of the new merchandise Nerve.com is thinking of selling. Hmmm....Nerve.com trucker hats? And the verdict is?

Wah-wah. (INSERT TUBA NOISE HERE) Thumbs down!

Wednesday, September 24th

So my big excited news is that I got a new camera! Woooo! I got the new Canon Digital Rebel and it's my first digital SLR. On the way home from work I stopped by Tara's to show her.

Voila! Look, it's my first "artsy pic" with the new cam.

As I sat there reading the manual, I learned that because of it's big internal memory, you can take a succession of pictures superfast. It was only a matter of time I was having Tara see how many faces she could make in four seconds. Ready....GO!

Thursday, September 25th

Thursday night I was walking around taking pictures with my new cam and I got a call from Sarah. We decided to meet up for dinner at Schiller's Liquor Bar near her house. I took a bunch of pictures of her and accidentally managed to take a picture of a ghost. See it there traveling at high speed through the background of the pic? Some people have tried to tell me that it was some sort of light refraction thingy, but if you look carefully you'll see that it starts out moving from left to right and as it gets to the right side of the picture it's in front of the people dining by the window, but behind the guy in the Hawaiian shirt. A simple trick of light couldn't appear between two objects in the background. Anyone else out there have any insight into what exactly this is a picture of? Please email me! (And it's not any type of smoke. There is no smoking allowed in the restaurant) You can click here for a larger, 2048 x 1360 version of the pic.

Saturday, September 27th

Saturday night was slow - so Grant and I walked around Chinatown and decided to take pictures. The night's theme: ACTION! Here's Grant doing a double-footed flying kick at a pile of fruit boxes.

More appropos to Chinatown, here's the spinning back-kick version.

Later on, we got a call from the Fatty who wanted to know what we were up to. "Taking stupid pictures of us kicking stuff in Chinatown," we told him. Without a pause Fatty was like "Awesome, I'll be there in ten." True to his word, Fatty was on the scene in less than ten minutes. (Courtesy of his bike and shiny, silver helmet).

Here's Grant in a decidedly non-action shot. Booooooooring.

And here's Fatty waving his arm so fast that it's actually blurring with speed. Talk about action, that's more like it.

Grant riding Fatty's bike. ACTION! Woooo.

Sunday, September 28th

On Sunday afternoon, Grant left my apartment (where he'd been temporarily staying a few days) to head to California until March. First, he'd be in LA for a few weeks to film a TV pilot and then for a few months up at our friends' ranch in northern California near Yosemite to finish up a book he's been working on. So long, lil' buddy. Faretheewell. These streets just won't be the same without your silly accent and DLR kicks. But somehow, we'll try to get *sniffle* by.

Monday, September 29th

Walking back to my place on Monday night, I ran into Big Joe and Howard outside of Nolita Tavern.

It was super early, but I decided to pop in and say hi to Sid and Buddy in the basement. Buddy told me that he wanted to me to see if my new camera was fast enough the capture his new, "flaming hand" pyrotechnic toy. (Because, hey, pyrotechnics takes karaoke to a whole new level). Here he is...ready...

...HOLY SHIT! What's up, three foot flame? Jeeeeez! Ok, and that's about it for September.
